Youth For Public Transport (Y4PT) is an international nonprofit, non-governmental, pro-sustainable mobility, youth-led organization. Established in 2005, it is officially registered under Belgian law and headquartered in Brussels. Y4PT is sustained by major global transport stakeholders and serves as the world's oldest and largest global youth network for sustainable mobility. Y4PT encourages the active participation of young people in advocating for sustainable mobility and identifying transport-related opportunities worldwide. It promotes the integrated use of public transport with other means of transport, striving for greater well-being and an improved quality of life for people globally. Y4PT acts as the main channel for promotion, communication, education, employment, and participation of youth in transport-related mobility issues. It functions as a pro-sustainable-mobility youth movement and network, a youth spokesperson on sustainable mobility, a youth platform and forum on sustainable mobility, a center of youth-oriented knowledge and innovation on sustainable mobility, and a bank of opportunities for young people in the transport-related mobility sector. Since its inception, Y4PT has engaged in various projects, events, and campaigns addressing sustainability and innovation in the transport sector worldwide. Notable initiatives include the widely acknowledged Y4PT Global Transport Hackathon series, which has involved approximately 11,700 participants, over 2,340 innovative project teams, in more than 83 cities across over 35 countries. Other activities encompass participation in EU-funded large-scale projects, Y4PT awards, Healthy Mobility campaigns, Breathable Cities research, and more. Y4PT collaborates with a diverse range of partners, including transport operators, authorities, industry, academics, civil society, international organizations, multilateral banks, cooperation agencies, associations, and NGOs. Y4PT's milestones include its creation as the UITP Youth Project in 2005, the launch of its first Youth Parliament in 2008 (later evolving into the Youth Lab and now known as the Youth Hackathon), adopting the name "Youth For Public Transport" in 2009, official registration as a Belgium-based Foundation in 2013, the launch of the current Global Transport Hackathon series in 2016, and recognition by the European Mobility Week Secretariat as one of the best practices of 2017. In 2025, Y4PT celebrated its 20th anniversary as a fully independent organization sustained by major global transport stakeholders. Y4PT's story began in Helsinki, Finland, in 2006, where a visionary group from the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) decided to bring a fresh perspective to the world of transport by involving young people and listening to their perspectives and experiences on public transport. Following the success in Helsinki, the initiative was replicated in other countries, engaging more young people in finding solutions for current social challenges and promoting better transportation systems that provide positive mobility experiences and accessibility to all citizens. Y4PT comprises young ambassadors worldwide, working together to promote sustainable development in communities globally, believing that boundaries and limitations should not exist in this endeavor.
