Communa is a non-profit organization dedicated to facilitating social transitional urbanism in Brussels, Belgium. Their primary mission is to legally and temporarily occupy vacant buildings to provide housing for marginalized individuals and create spaces for living, play, work, and creativity. By repurposing unused properties, Communa aims to make the city more affordable, resilient, democratic, and creative. They operate under a shared governance model, where each employee participates in the operational and strategic management of the organization, fostering trust and agility. Communa also supports other structures in implementing transitional projects and engages in collective initiatives to further their social impact. Their portfolio includes various sites such as Le Belafonte in Koekelberg, Maxima – Minima in Forest, and Sorocité in Evere, each serving as a hub for community-driven projects and services.
