The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), or Free University of Brussels, is a Dutch and English-speaking research university situated in Brussels, Belgium. Established in 1970 following the division of the original Free University of Brussels, founded in 1834 by Pierre-Théodore Verhaegen, VUB upholds the principle of academic freedom, as reflected in its motto, "Scientia vincere tenebras" (Conquering darkness by science), and its slogan, "Redelijk eigenzinnig" (Reasonably opinionated). VUB is recognized for its research excellence, ranking 182nd globally, with its research articles being highly cited.
