FARI - AI for the Common Good Institute is an independent, not-for-profit initiative led by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB). The institute unites interdisciplinary expertise from ten research groups specializing in AI, data, robotics, social sciences, ethics, and law. (fari.brussels ) FARI is dedicated to developing, studying, and promoting the adoption and governance of AI, data, and robotics technologies in a trustworthy, transparent, open, inclusive, ethical, and responsible manner. Inspired by humanistic and European values, the institute aims to leverage these technologies for societal benefits, such as strengthening and preserving fundamental human rights and achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. (fari.brussels ) The institute collaborates closely with the Brussels public administration to transform the region into a smart city with sustainable impacts that address both local needs and international ambitions. FARI operates at the intersection of civil society and research, fostering social innovation and generating knowledge. The institute plans to roll out key services for public administration, local organizations, SMEs, and individuals, including coaching programs and support initiatives in AI, data, and robotics, leading to successful proof of concepts and the development of go-to-market strategies. (fari.brussels ) FARI's community comprises 300 researchers from the ten AI, data, and robotics research groups at VUB and ULB, coordinated by a central team in close collaboration with various partners. The institute is committed to disseminating its latest research outputs on AI, data, and robotics for the common good. (fari.brussels ) In January 2022, FARI officially launched AI for the Common Good projects under the NextGenerationEU program, developing new innovation instruments jointly with Brussels public administrations through the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) grant. These projects include a joint PhD program, collaborative research projects with companies and the public sector, an AI for the Common Good Academy, a Brussels-centered AI Experience Hub, and an AI for the Common Good entrepreneurship support program for start-ups and existing incubation programs. (fari.brussels ) FARI also offers educational programs such as the "Postgraduate 'AI for the Common Good'" and "Introduction to AI for the Common Good | AI Foundations," designed to equip professionals and recent graduates with the knowledge and skills to implement responsible and sustainable AI strategies in their respective fields.
